Other Thailand Visas:
Thai O visas and Thailand Retirement Visas
As stated previously on this website, Thailand is a very popular destination among tourists and business travelers, but there are other reasons for visiting the Kingdom of Thailand and those reasons often do not neatly fit into the many Thai visa categories. For this reason, there is a catch-all category for those seeking a Thai visa for reasons other than those explicitly permitted pursuant to Thai Immigration law. For example, the most common reason many non-Thai citizens travel to Thailand or remain in the country is to be with loved ones who reside in Thailand. The Thai O visa is an effective travel document for those staying with family in the Kingdom of Thailand.
The most common reason for Thai O visa issuance is based upon a foreigner’s marital relationship to a Thai national. In many cases, Canadian Nationals opt to remain in Thailand rather than bringing their spouse back to Canada. A Canadian could also be sponsored for a Thai O visa based upon a parent-child relationship with a Thai Citizen. For instance if one has a Thai parent, then they could obtain an O visa or if one has a Thai child, then an O visa application could be approved based upon that relationship.
In recent years, there has been a rise in Medical Tourism to Thailand. Thai O visas are the perfect travel document for those traveling to Thailand to take advantage of the reasonable prices for Thai medical and dental care.
A sub-classification of the Thai O visa is the Thai retirement visa. Technically the retirement visa is classified as an O visa, but the restrictions placed upon retirees are cumbersome when compared to other O visa holders. For example, an individual present in Thailand on a Thai retirement visa is ineligible for employment authorization. This means a retirement visa holder cannot apply for a Thai work permit. This makes sense if one keeps in mind that the retirement visa is intended for those wishing to retire, not work in Thailand. The major upside of the retirement visa is the fact that it allows the bearer to remain in the Kingdom without the need to do “border runs.” Instead of leaving the country and being stamped back in, the retirement visa holder can simply renew his or her status at a local immigration office in Thailand. Although, some expatriates in Thailand find that the border run is a less cumbersome process than checking in with Thai Immigration, but this is a matter of preference.
As with any visa application, one should prepare a well founded submission and remit it to the proper government agency. Contact Integrity Legal for more information regarding Thai Immigration and the benefits that one can enjoy if approved for a classic Thai O visa or a Thai retirement visa.
