Thailand remains one of the world’s great tourist and vacation destinations. Thailand boasts some of the most breathtaking natural scenery on Earth and some of the most pleasant people in Asia. Many who experience the Kingdom of Thailand for the first time feel as if they have “come home,” upon entering this non-fictional wonderland. While the modern Thailand has the ability to captivate even the most cynical westerner, the history of the Southeast Asian Kingdom is even more impressive.

The Kingdom of Siam (the name of modern day Thailand until 1932) was one of the few areas in Southeast Asia to avoid colonization by the Western powers. Many have attributed this to the Thai Monarchy’s incredible diplomatic prowess. However achieved, Thai culture remained largely untouched by the West. In 1932, a revolution changed the face of Thai government as a Constitutional Monarchy was declared. To this day, the Monarchy of Thailand is held in high regard by both the Thai people and the international community. At the same time, Thailand began the process of modernization. Today the Kingdom of Thailand is both modern and traditional: modern in business and technology, but traditional both socially and culturally. This combination creates a very exotic lifestyle for the visiting foreigner. There are some visitors who become so captivated that they refuse to leave. These people are referred to generally as expatriates or colloquially as “expats.”

As Thailand has become more modernized, so too has the Thai Immigration system. At one time, foreign nationals were accorded Thai Permanent Residence upon arrival in the Kingdom. Then non-immigrant visas were introduced. Today, the Thai visa system is extremely complex as different government agencies have different rules that deal with the many phases of the Immigration process. Many foreign nationals who remain in Thailand for a long period of time can become frustrated by the Immigration process as the rules seem to continually change. It should be noted that rule changes are often not arbitrary and the Thai Immigration rules still remain less confusing than some western countries. That being said, the Thai Immigration regulations can still cause consternation for foreigners in Thailand.

Canadians currently make up a large percentage of foreign tourists who opt to travel to Thailand each year. Many people from Canada choose Thailand as their vacation destination because of the climate and laid back attitude of the Thai people. Occasionally, some of these Canadian travelers opt to make Thailand their home or primary place of business. For these travelers, a long term Thai visa or a Thai business visa is often the best Immigration option. For those thinking of remaining in Thailand long term, it may be best to explore immigration options before leaving Canada as the Thai Immigration process is often less cumbersome if one gets a “jump start,” on the process.

For those in Canada or their country of origin, the Thai visa process can be streamlined with the assistance of a firm experienced at dealing with the intricacies of Thai Immigration procedure.
